Sex in water: what you need to know about sex in the sea, river or lake

“In a tub, in a trough, in a tub, in a river, in a stream, in the ocean. You can have sex both in the bath and in the sauna – always and everywhere. Because – why not, really? There is something about water sex that is inherently liberating, makes feelings brighter, and sensations sharper. However, there are also risks that you should be aware of. In particular, you could slip, get an infection, or perhaps break a few laws (which you definitely don't want to do). Let's share our secrets: what you can and definitely shouldn't do.

If you are in the shower

Sex in the shower can be both fun and interesting: jets flow beautifully over your naked bodies, so that you both look like characters in a romantic movie.

“The shower gives you a great opportunity to try out standing poses that everyone has somehow never gotten around to on the bed or sofa. Plus, shower sex is also great for solo play. Find out what you like and show it to your partner. He will also like it with a very good chance,” says sexologist Olga Vasilenko.

But: there is a completely non-zero risk of slipping. Use an anti-slip shower mat and avoid complex erotic acrobatics.

If you are in the bath

Unlike sex in the shower, you can lie down or lie down relatively comfortably in a bathtub, being partially or completely submerged in water. “But immersion in warm water opens the door to potential infections. And adding bubbles, bath salts or other erotic oils to the water can increase the risk of developing a urinary tract infection,” warns Olga.

Remember: water alone will not spread a yeast infection from one person to another to another, but participating in underwater sex games can do this with ease. In other words, you should avoid sex in water until you or your partner are clear of the infection.

If you're in a hot tub

Most bathtubs are still quite compact, but a hot tub can be a great alternative. Plus, many hot tubs have ledges and seats that allow you to change positions.

“Contrary to rumors, sex in a hot tub does not prevent pregnancy—you're just as likely to get pregnant in hot water as you are on dry land. Therefore, be sure to make sure that you and your partner are using suitable methods of contraception,” Olga insists.

And no, a condom in this case will not be a very suitable method: it can easily break from hot water and bleach. So think again and maybe leave the Jacuzzi just for foreplay and do the main program on dry land.

If you're in the pool

There's so much here places, both vertically and horizontally, that you are practically unlimited in the choice of movements (with a discount for the need to maintain buoyancy, of course).

“The water in the pool is usually treated with chemicals, and this is in no way beneficial for the microflora of the genital organs; it is very easy to pick up a bunch of infections in it. It is also important to make sure that you are not breaking any rules. Stay away from public swimming pools,” warns Olga.

If you're not a world champion in synchronized swimming and the deep end of the pool is a little scary for you, go to the shallow end and use a ladder.

If you're in the ocean, river or lake

Sex in the ocean, river or lake can be absolutely thrilling: you get the adrenaline rush of being outdoors, the satisfaction of losing yourself in the moment and the delight of being at one with nature.

“But that lovely water can become a breeding ground for germs you don't want on or in your private parts – like parasites. And try to choose a place away from witnesses; in many countries (especially Muslim ones!) public sex is prohibited by law,” the sexologist reminds.

Otherwise, swim to an area shallow enough for you and your partner to stand, but far enough away that no one can see what you're doing underwater.

General tips and tricks

Sexual intercourse is not the only option. Try different types of stimulation with your partner – manual, for example.

Silicone-based lubrication is the key. Water-based lubricants are washed off under water, and water itself is not a lubricant at all, but quite the opposite.

If you swim so-so (and even if it’s good), you shouldn’t swim far on air mattresses and other watercraft. If you stumble upon a rip current, you can be carried far out to sea, so getting back out will be just fun, not funny at all. And the mattress may begin to deflate completely unexpectedly, and this will also add thrills – but not at all the ones you expect.
