Female abstinence: the dangerous consequences of long-term abstinence from sex

A lot is said about male abstinence, but not much is known about what happens to a woman’s body without constant sexual contact. We talked with sexologist Vera Yakovleva, who spoke about the possible consequences of the lack of regular intimacy for the fair sex.

Cardiovascular diseases

We can say that activity during sex is equal to a full workout in the gym, and therefore the heart and blood vessels work at full capacity. Naturally, with regular sexual activity, blood flows well through all arteries, there is no stagnation. Problems can begin if the load in bed is reduced to nothing. Belief: “If your physical activity leaves much to be desired without sex, you are at risk of having a heart attack in adulthood.”

Arousal slows down

When there is no constant intimate contact, the body gradually reduces its arousal function. Vera: “You won’t be able to get aroused automatically like with regular sexual intercourse after a long period of abstinence. It will take more time to become aroused and sometimes additional stimulation from the partner.”

Painful sensations

With prolonged abstinence, the vagina becomes unaccustomed to all kinds of stimulation, which can subsequently affect the quality of sex when it does happen. “Many of my clients report discomfort if sex is absent from their lives for more than six months. Fortunately, the discomfort quickly passes if you don’t put your sex life on hold again,” explains the sexologist.

Deterioration of the immune system

Of course, you won’t suffer from a sore throat every six months or start catching viruses if sex leaves your life for a while. However, as our expert says, women whose sex life is fairly regular are less likely to catch infections and recover faster if they do get sick.
