The girl regrets that she did not know about the disease earlier, as it deprived her of a normal life.
A woman from the UK, Shannon Ashley Nelson, was subjected to ridicule from her teenage years -for her legs, but only in adulthood did she manage to find out the cause of the problems. This was reported by The Sun.
Nelson, 40, said that from a young age she was embarrassed about her figure and therefore gave up many of her favorite activities – sports, going to the theater, meeting with friends. Only at 33, after giving birth to a child, did doctors diagnose her with lipedema, a genetic disease in which fat accumulates abnormally in the legs, buttocks, thighs and sometimes arms. This disease is often confused with obesity, but diets and weight loss do not help solve the problem.
According to Nelson, she regrets that she did not know about the disease earlier, as it deprived her of a normal life.
“I could not do household chores or spend time with my daughter. It annoys me that my daughter doesn’t have many photos of me because of my lack of self-confidence. “I was on a diet all the time, but my legs didn’t lose weight,” she admitted.
The woman added that because of lipedema, her legs were constantly numb and painful, and the skin on them was covered with ulcers and itched.
Doctors suggested that the British woman undergo liposuction and remove fibrous fat in the area of the legs and hips, but before that she had to lose 20 kilograms. In the USA, such an operation costs 20 thousand dollars.
Over a year and a half, Nelson underwent five operations, during which she had more than 25 liters of fat removed. This has relieved the patient of many problems, but she needs to continue treatment.
“My biggest challenge right now is to monitor my overall health while I try to get back on my feet. “I just want to be a good mother, and I won’t be able to do this if my legs continue to grow,” the woman concluded.
